Between the Threads brings together two artists, Sivan Baron & Natalie Schuler, experimenting with traditional 2-dimensional mediums by incorporating embroidery & stitching into their work.

Sivan Baron is a printmaker & illustrator based in Coquitlam, working primarily with linocut printmaking. Her practice combines bold, graphic carving with hand finished embroidered details. Baron describes her art as “Floating Moments” as they are not rooted in traditional scenery but are instead elements of everyday life reimagined through bold shapes, stylized lines & carefully chosen colour palettes. Working in linocut, Baron is drawn to the physicality of carving her images into the linoleum & manually printing, where each mark is intentional yet carries the spontaneity of the hand. Her pieces are finished with hand stitched details, transforming each piece into something singular, blurring the line between editioned print & unique artwork. This layering of techniques allows her to bring warmth & intimacy into the work, reinforcing the idea that handmade art can carry both narrative & emotional resonance.

Natalie Schuler is an abstract painter who resides on Bowen Island. Her work is shaped by her healing journey, the teachings she received through a trauma-informed Breathwork practice & her growing interest in depth psychology. In her body of work entitled Hungry Thoughts, Sculer explores her relationship to eating & her body. It is based on her own lived experience, having had to work through disordered eating, & reforming how she thinks & feels about food & being in her body, & coming to a place of acceptance within herself. Schuler’s work contains recurring elements – forks, threads, colour. The fork is traditionally a symbol of nourishment & connection over shared meals, but here it’s also a singular object representing the challenges surrounding eating. Stitching the forks into the canvas brings a physicality to the intangible psychological/emotional journey. The layers of thread resemble fascia (the connective tissue under our skin) holding together memory & emotion. Her pallets of contrasting colour speak to the contrasting points of views that society is made up of. The use of pattern & the uneasy colour relationships vibrate to communicate the tension felt wanting to reject the body, while also trying to control the narrative around what to eat. Schuler invites the viewer to go within to connect to your own personal viewpoints & memories connecting you to your relationship with food, eating & the body that has been affected by those choices, mentally & physically without judgement.
