‘Music Restored’ - Music from 17th and 18th Century England
A program of music from the time of the Restoration, when music-making in England flourished & composers were given free reign to experiment.
Performed on period instruments by
La Modestine; four renowned Westcoast musicians Marc Destrube & Linda Melstad - violin, Natalie Mackie - viola da gamba, & Michael Jarvis - harpsichord.

The 17th century in England was a time of turbulence, with King Charles I being deposed & beheaded, Oliver Cromwell taking over as Lord Protector, & then eventually the restoration of the monarchy. By the 1660’s, under the benevolent rule of Charles II, music returned to court life, theatres flourished, & the first public concerts emerged, reflecting the influence of immigration from the Continent & the remarkable collaboration of poets, composers, painters, & architects.

La Modestine
presents an array of chamber music from this period, with selections from mid-17th through to mid-18th century; music composed at a time when England was the epicentre of music-making & publishing.
