Nanaimo-based artist Julian Growcott invites viewers to challenge their perceptions of traditional landscapes as a subject & reality itself. Born in England, Julian is a Graduate of Emily Carr University of Art & Design. His starkly focused modern landscapes are combined with surreal imagery, painted in acrylics & gouache with very fine brushwork & realistic details. Influenced by lucid dreams & childhood memories of England his subjects are as diverse as village streets, smoky factories amid pastoral countrysides & high-rise buildings, most with a backdrop of curious cloud formations. Some images look like one subject but on closer inspection are quite another.

Check out the virtual opening - take a tour of the exhibition, hear from Julian as he discusses his inspirations & process, & take questions from viewers.
