What are you looking at? How does it make you feel? How are you engaging with art? This exhibition invites you to contemplate what you're seeing & formulate your own conclusions around the work of four artists who are applying dream-like imagery & symbolism to explore their relationships with the world outside & within.
Stephen Arthur is an intuitive painter from Vancouver. Working with tempera paint, he embraces the surprises that unfold from his unconscious mind onto the blank surface. Each stroke reacts intuitively to the last, guiding the emergence of a final piece. Drawing from his background in biology, neuroscience & filmmaking, Arthur offers a unique perspective on themes of time & existence, exploring the intricate dance of life & consciousness. Through his intuitive process, he uncovers unexpected insights, crafting visual narratives rich with layered meanings, much like the complexities of life itself.
Eva Lederer is a multidisciplinary artist based in West Vancouver, originally from the Czech Republic. In her art she aims to encapsulate the beauty of nature. Lederer blends realism with abstract elements & vibrant colours to breathe life into her creations, heightening the everyday wonders that surround us into expressive dream-like realms. Each piece she creates is a celebration of life's gifts & a testament to the enduring power of expression to enrich & enliven our existence.
Maliheh Vatankhah is a North Vancouver painter originally from Iran. In her paintings, she celebrates the enduring strength & resilience of women across history. The central figures embody passion & determination, bearing the weight of countless untold stories & victories. Supported by symbolic elements such as ancient sculptures or classic Persian poetry, these narratives embrace the collective spirit of women who have sparked change & defied conventions. She believes painting is like a journey for her to another world & we are invited to follow & witness the essence of women's empowerment & the preservation of their indelible legacy.
Wan Li Zhang is an artist & instructor based in Vancouver, originally from China. Her artistic journey celebrates the simplicity & the timeless elegance of monochrome - all works on display are black ink on white paper. Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 lockdown, Zhang found solace in expressing herself through ink pen drawings on small pieces of paper. These spontaneous creations, inspired by observations & dreams, became a therapeutic exploration of symbolism & imagination. Through these pieces, she invites viewers into a spiritual art world, where simplicity reveals profound beauty.
