Lisa Arthur

'The Chief'

Shweta Patil

'A Certain Romance (Boundary Bay)'

Phoebe Tsui

'After the storm passes'

Painters Lisa Arthur, Shweta Patil & Phoebe Tsui explore the emotional resonance & sense of belonging found in our coastal landscapes with works ranging in style from representational to abstract.

Lisa Arthur’s practice is grounded in a dialogue between East Asian ink traditions with contemporary abstraction. Based on Bowen Island, she has studied with masters in brush & ink painting & calligraphy, perfecting her unique style. Arthur approaches the brushstroke as a living gesture rather than a tool of description. She allows the properties of the medium - absorption, diffusion & gravity - to participate actively in the formation of ethereal mountains, forests & shorelines looking less realistic & more like shifting spaces of mist, water & terrain. Her works function less as depictions of landscape than as records of its underlying dynamics - flow, erosion, atmosphere, & time.

Shweta Patil’s artistic practice is inspired by her strong connection to nature. On a journey from India to North Carolina, USA, & now based in Langley, she endeavours to capture the colours & feelings of seasons in the various landscapes she has visited on to her canvas. On the influence of the natural world Patil says “We all are a part of it, & I believe we can find answers to all our questions in there.” Her recent works in acrylic capture the various elements of the Pacific coast - feel, flow, texture, colour. Patil’s fluid style, full of energetic brush strokes, exaggerated colours & abstracted forms, allows for a freedom to express the authenticity of her experiences & interpretations of nature.

Phoebe Tsui has always been drawn to the quiet strength of the natural world; her work reflecting a lifelong connection to nature as both inspiration & solace. Based in Vancouver, she captures the ever-shifting beauty of the West Coast in oil & acrylic paintings that explore stillness, change, resilience, & calm. Rooted in the West Coast’s ever-changing shoreline, her paintings hold space for both movement & stillness, storm & clearing, tide & pause. Using layered textures & subtle shifts in color & atmosphere, Tsui creates places for the eye to rest & the body to exhale. Each painting becomes a visual refuge, an anchor in the midst of change, inviting viewers to find their own moments of quiet & renewal.
